Accident Scene

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has named truck drivers David Norman, from Wichita Falls, TX and Daniel Dolf, from Carrollton, GA, TCA Highway Angels for stopping to extinguish a car on fire in the median of a highway. Both men drive for Melton Truck Lines out of Tulsa, OK.

It’s an incredible story: On September 7, 2023, Norman and his trainee, Dolf, were driving on I-45 outside of Dallas, TX when they noticed smoke up ahead. A female driver had lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the center median. They soon spotted her car on fire in the road median. Immediately, Norman (who at one time was a registered first responder and former volunteer firefighter) ran out and attempted to use his fire extinguisher to help put it out and make sure everyone was okay.

“I grabbed the fire extinguisher to keep the fire from spreading—I was putting the fire out around the car,” Norman said. He added that his trainee, Dolf, parked the truck and came running over to help. “ When he got back over there he hopped in the back of the fire truck when it showed up and he helped too.”

No one was injured in this unfortunate incident and Norman and Dolf were able to prevent the fire from spreading. Three fire companies arrived at the scene and made sure the fire was completely out.

“Old habits kick back in; twenty years ago I was a registered first responder here in Texas,” Norman said, explaining why he went to the lengths he did.

Since the program’s inception in August 1997, nearly 1,300 professional truck drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage displayed while on the job. Thanks to the program’s presenting sponsor, EpicVue, and supporting sponsors, DriverFacts and Northland Insurance, TCA is able to showcase outstanding drivers like David & Daniel.
