The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has named professional truck driver Salvador Montes of El Paso, Texas, as its latest Highway Angel. Montes drives for Stagecoach Cartage & Distribution, LP, also of El Paso.
On June 13, 2013, Montes was driving along I-10 westbound toward El Paso when he saw another tractor-trailer hit a guard rail and plunge into a ditch. Then he heard an explosion. He and two other bystanders ran down into the ditch to help. Both the tractor-trailer and the driver were on fire. Using his fire extinguisher, Montes put out the fire enveloping the driver. Then, he and the two other men removed the charred clothing from the driver and moved him out of the ditch until help arrived.
TCA has presented Montes with a Highway Angel lapel pin, certificate, and clothing patch. The organization also gave Stagecoach Cartage & Distribution, LP, a certificate acknowledging that one of its drivers is a Highway Angel.
Since the program’s inception in August 1997, hundreds of drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for the exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage they have displayed while on the job.
