Frequently Asked Questions

How Did the Program Begin?

Trucking industry professional, Lana Batts, who served as the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) president from 1992-2000, shared the following op-ed with Women in Trucking (a non-profit organization):

“We decided to do something about it. We wanted to put a ‘Face Behind the Windshield’ and elevate the public’s awareness and appreciation for outstanding truck drivers,” shared Batts. “We wanted to tell them more about truck drivers than they see on the six o’clock news or in badly-acted action/adventure movies. Building on the highly successful Goodyear Highway Heroes, we began Highway Angels Program to recognize the good deeds done by truck drivers everyday.”

What is the Nomination Process?

Highway Angels are nominated by their employers, fellow professional truck drivers, or the motorists they’ve assisted.

Once nominated, the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) verifies the details involved and talks with the professional truck driver(s) before deeming him/her or the driving team as Highway Angels.

How Are Drivers Awarded?

Typically two weeks after a professional truck driver has been nominated as a Highway Angel, a packet will be sent containing:

  • Highway Angel Lapel Pin;
  • Highway Angel and TCA Iron-On Patches;
  • Highway Angel One-of-a-Kind Decals;
  • Certificate of Appreciation; and
  • Certificate of Recognition for Employer.
